Saturn's largest moon, the only moon in the solar system with a substantial atmosphere, and the reason Voyager 1 stopped touring. Ground-based spectroscopy had shown methane in its atmosphere, and the prospect of an organic-chemistry laboratory the size of a planet was judged more valuable than adding two more planets to one spacecraft's tally. The flyby was therefore designed to pass close and behind Titan, using the occultation of the radio signal to sound the atmosphere. It worked — the atmosphere turned out to be mostly nitrogen and surprisingly dense — but the cameras saw nothing but featureless orange haze, and the geometry required to get there deflected Voyager 1 steeply north out of the plane of the planets. Not a place on Earth.
