Visited once, by Voyager 2 on 24 January 1986, and never since — the only close observation of the planet that exists. The encounter is unusually difficult because Uranus is tipped roughly on its side, so its moons and rings lie in a plane nearly perpendicular to the spacecraft's approach and the whole system had to be photographed in a few hours rather than swept past over days. Voyager 2 found around ten previously unknown moons, additional rings, and a magnetic field tilted steeply from the rotation axis and offset from the planet's centre — a configuration that no model had anticipated and that is still not fully explained. Not a place on Earth.
