The fifth of the South East Asia – Middle East – Western Europe consortium cables, ready for service on 13 December 2016, running roughly 20,000 km from Singapore to southern France and Italy with an ultimate design capacity given as 24 Tbps. Its landing points are the Journey in miniature: Tuas in Singapore, Malacca in Malaysia, Dumai and Medan in Indonesia, Kuakata in Bangladesh, Ngwe Saung in Myanmar, Matara in Sri Lanka, Karachi in Pakistan, Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, Qalhat in Oman, Haramous in Djibouti, Al Hudaydah in Yemen, Yanbu in Saudi Arabia, Zafarana and Abu Talat in Egypt, Marmaris in Turkey, Catania in Italy and Toulon in France. Read that list as geography rather than as a list and the whole argument of this Journey appears: the cable threads the Strait of Malacca, crosses the Indian Ocean, enters the Red Sea through the Bab el-Mandeb, comes out of the water in Egypt and travels overland to the Mediterranean. It is owned by a consortium of nineteen operators, which is the older ownership model — many national carriers sharing one asset — and it stands in deliberate contrast in this pack to the cables now built by a handful of content companies.
