The analytical frame, associated above all with E. A. Wrigley, for what industrialisation actually escaped. In an organic economy every form of energy and almost every material — food, fodder, fuel, fibre, building timber, tallow, leather — is a current product of photosynthesis, so all of them compete for the same finite acreage. Growth in one use is subtraction from another: more iron means more charcoal means more coppice woodland means less arable, and the ceiling is set by land area and annual plant growth rather than by ingenuity. Wrigley's point is that this ceiling is not a metaphor but an accounting identity, and that no amount of better organisation removes it. Coal removes it, because coal is photosynthesis already banked over hundreds of millions of years and drawn down against no current acreage at all. Reading the transition this way reframes the whole subject: the inventions are not the cause but the means, and the question becomes why one economy started spending a stock while every other was still living on an income.
