Cabeus Crater

A crater roughly 98 km across near the lunar south pole, much of whose floor is permanently shadowed. Neutron measurements from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter showed it held one of the strongest hydrogen enhancements near the pole, which is why it was selected as the target for the LCROSS impact experiment on 9 October 2009. The spent Centaur upper stage struck a shadowed part of the floor at approximately 84.7°S, 311.3°E. Cabeus is the site of the first direct measurement of water in a lunar cold trap.
