The first Express d'Orient leaves the Gare de l'Est

node

Around two dozen passengers leave Paris on the inaugural working, twice weekly, via Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest to Giurgiu on the Danube. There the railway stops: passengers ferry across to Ruse, take a second train to Varna on the Black Sea, and complete the journey to Constantinople by steamer. The service is sold as a through journey to the Orient and is, in engineering terms, three journeys with two transfers — which is precisely the gap the next six years of Balkan construction closes.

A node is not a place. Drawing it on a map would assert something about the world that no stored fact supports.

  51. Evidence
  52. Supports the 4 October 1883 first departure from the Gare de l'Est and the service's operation by the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. V55 verification basis: the SNCF archives page was returned as a search result and is a railway-archive source, but it was not fetched and the specific wording was not read.
  53. Supports the 1883 routing via Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest to Giurgiu, with a Danube ferry to Ruse, a second train to Varna and a steamer to Constantinople, and about two dozen passengers on the first departure. V55 verification basis: this routing was carried in an attributed search summary of the article; the page was not fetched, and the passenger count is not traced to a manifest.
