Richthofen coins the term Seidenstrasse

In the first volume of China, published in Berlin, the geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen names the Han-period routes between China and the West Seidenstrasse. The network had operated for roughly sixteen centuries without a name, and had been effectively dormant as a principal corridor for four hundred years before it acquired one.
