The Amur line from Sretensk to Khabarovsk, built after the Russo-Japanese War demonstrated the danger of depending on the Manchurian shortcut, gives the Trans-Siberian a through route lying entirely within Russian territory. It is a second railway across ground the first had deliberately avoided — colder, harder, partly permafrost — and it is built anyway, because the cost of the terrain turned out to be smaller than the cost of the border.
