Bessemer describes the converter to the British Association

node

Henry Bessemer presents his process for making malleable iron and steel without fuel to the British Association at Cheltenham: air blown through molten pig iron burns out carbon and silicon, and the heat of that oxidation sustains the process. Combined with the later Siemens-Martin open-hearth route, it turns steel from a craft product into a bulk commodity. Architecture does not cause this and does not at first notice it.

A node is not a place. Drawing it on a map would assert something about the world that no stored fact supports.

  14. Description of the converter process in which air blown through molten pig iron removes carbon and silicon, the heat of oxidation sustaining the process without external fuel - the step that made bulk steel cheap. V55 verification basis: the paper and occasion are established record; the text was not consulted in this session and the exact title wording should be confirmed.
