Gurnett, Kurth and colleagues published measurements from Voyager 1's plasma wave subsystem showing electron oscillations near 2.6 kilohertz during two intervals in late 2012 and spring 2013. Because the oscillation frequency depends only on electron density, the tone implied about 0.08 electrons per cubic centimetre — far denser than solar wind at that distance and consistent with interstellar plasma. The announcement came thirteen months after the crossing itself, because the evidence needed a disturbance from the Sun to arrive and set the surrounding plasma ringing.
