Suger's choir at Saint-Denis is consecrated

node

The new choir and double ambulatory at Saint-Denis are consecrated after about four years of work. The pointed arch, rib vault and buttress are combined so that the wall between the radiating chapels almost disappears and glass becomes continuous. Suger recorded his intentions in writing, and they are theological - light as a route to the divine - with structure as the means.

A node is not a place. Drawing it on a map would assert something about the world that no stored fact supports.

  21. Reconstructs how Gothic vaults were actually erected, with centring, falsework and sequence as the central problem, and treats the economy of timber formwork as a driver of the rib vault. Supports the STRUCTURE_GOTHIC_VAULT and Gothic site records. V55 verification basis: real and standard, not consulted in this session.
