The imperial government announces the railway on 9 March 1891 and the Tsarevich Nicholas inaugurates work at Vladivostok in May, laying the station's foundation stone. Building proceeds in parallel sections rather than from one end — West Siberian, Central Siberian, South Ussuri and later Circum-Baikal and Amur — because the distances and the short season make a single work front impossible. More than 7,000 km of track are laid in the first decade.
