The mission's single most consequential trade. To pass close behind Titan and sound its atmosphere by radio occultation, Voyager 1 had to take a trajectory that deflected it steeply north out of the ecliptic. The atmosphere turned out to be dense and mostly nitrogen, and the cameras saw only unbroken orange haze. The cost was every remaining planet: from that moment Voyager 1 was a spacecraft with no further targets, only a direction.
