Eutelsat OneWeb

company · economy

The instructive counterexample among broadband constellations. OneWeb was founded to build a low-Earth-orbit network of several hundred satellites, began launching in 2019, and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2020 having failed to raise the next tranche of capital — a failure of financing rather than of engineering, and one that arrived before the constellation could earn anything. It was rescued by a consortium including the United Kingdom government and Bharti Global, completed its first-generation constellation of roughly 630 operational satellites in 2023, and merged with the French geostationary operator Eutelsat in September 2023 to form a company operating in both geostationary and low Earth orbit. It sells wholesale capacity to distribution partners in maritime, aviation, enterprise and government rather than retail consumer subscriptions. The case demonstrates the structural hazard of the model: a constellation earns nothing until it is nearly complete, so the capital requirement is front-loaded into a period with no revenue at all. Not a place.

A company is not a place. Drawing it on a map would assert something about the world that no stored fact supports.

  20. The satellite industry's revenue is reported in four segments — satellite services, ground equipment, satellite manufacturing and launch services — with services and ground equipment together forming the large majority and launch a low single-digit share. V55 verification basis: this session had no network egress and no remaining WebSearch budget, so the report was not retrieved; the segment structure is stated from author knowledge and every figure derived from it is given as a magnitude rather than a number.
