Karl Schwarzschild

German astrophysicist and director of the Potsdam Astrophysical Observatory who produced the first exact solution of Einstein's field equations within weeks of their publication, while serving in the German army on the Russian front in the winter of 1915-1916. He sent the result to Einstein, who communicated it to the Prussian Academy; it appeared in 1916. He died on 11 May 1916 of the autoimmune disease pemphigus, contracted at the front, a few months after the work that carries his name. What he did not do is identify a black hole: the radius that bears his name appeared in his solution as a place where the coordinates misbehave, and for decades the prevailing view treated that as a mathematical artefact rather than a physical boundary. The distinction between a coordinate singularity and a real one was only fully clarified in the 1950s and 1960s. Not a place.
A person is not a place. Drawing it on a map would assert something about the world that no stored fact supports.
