Blue Zones

node · earth · Dispersed — Sardinia, Okinawa, Nicoya, Ikaria, Loma Linda

A set of geographically dispersed populations claimed to have exceptional concentrations of centenarians: the Nuoro–Ogliastra area of Sardinia, Okinawa in Japan, the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, Ikaria in Greece and the Seventh-day Adventist community of Loma Linda, California. The term originates with Michel Poulain and Gianni Pes, who marked the Sardinian area in blue pen on a map during the AKEA study, and was popularised by Dan Buettner. The lifestyle explanations offered — plant-heavy diets, daily physical activity, social integration, moderate calorie intake — are individually plausible and collectively unfalsifiable as stated. The demographic basis is now seriously contested: Saul Newman has argued in preprints that regions with high reported centenarian rates correlate with late or absent birth registration, with pension incentives and with poverty rather than with health, and that Okinawa's reported advantage does not survive scrutiny of the records. Okinawa's own statistics have in any case deteriorated since the 1990s. Treat this object as a contested claim, not a finding.

  17. Evidence
  18. Supports the identification of the Sardinian longevity area and the origin of the blue-zone designation. V55 verification basis: not retrieved; the reported male-to-female centenarian ratio is recalled and must be checked.
  19. Cited to document the record-quality critique of blue zones and supercentenarian data. V55 verification basis: not retrieved; the exact preprint title, its version history and whether any version has since been peer-reviewed and published are all unchecked, which is why this record is flagged as a preprint.
