The Heart's Content cable station

The North American end of the successful transatlantic telegraph, in a sheltered inlet on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland. The cable completed in July 1866 was landed here, and the 1865 cable — lost in mid-ocean when it parted during laying — was recovered from the seabed and completed to the same place, so that within weeks two working cables ran from Ireland to this village. The station operated until 1965 and survives as a provincial historic site with its instrument room preserved. Newfoundland's role is a pure consequence of geometry: it is the part of North America closest to Europe, and every transatlantic system from 1858 to TAT-1 in 1956 used it, so a fishing settlement of a few hundred people spent a century as one of the busiest communications nodes in the world. It is also the clearest available demonstration that landing points are inherited rather than chosen afresh, because the pull that brought cables here was never population or commerce — it was distance across water.
