An underground neutrino observatory operated by the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research of the University of Tokyo, roughly 1,000 m below Mount Ikeno in the Mozumi mine near Hida, Gifu Prefecture. Its predecessor detector Kamiokande-II recorded part of the neutrino burst from SN 1987A on 23 February 1987 - a handful of interactions in a tank of water that constitute the only direct observation ever made of a stellar core collapsing. The rock overhead is the instrument's essential feature: it absorbs cosmic-ray muons that would otherwise swamp a signal of a few events. The site remains in use for Super-Kamiokande and is the location of the successor experiment now under construction.

Volume and page numbers are deliberately not asserted because they were not confirmed. Reported event counts differ between accounts: Kamiokande-II is quoted as both 11 and 12 events, with 8 for IMB and 5 for Baksan.
