The power loom

Edmund Cartwright patented a power-driven loom in 1785, but the machine that mattered was not his. Early power looms stopped constantly because the warp had to be sized and dressed to survive mechanical beating, and it took another generation of incremental work — dressing machines, better stop-motions, cast-iron framing — before a weaving shed could be run at a profit. That delay is the human centre of the whole story. For roughly thirty years after spinning was mechanised, yarn was abundant and hand weaving was in demand, and the number of handloom weavers in Britain rose to a peak in the 1820s. Then the power loom became reliable, and it did not merely compete with them: it drove piece rates down year after year while the trade's numbers stayed high because there was nowhere else to go. The handloom weavers' decline through the 1830s and 1840s is the best-documented case in the period of a technology destroying a livelihood slowly enough that everyone could see it happening.
