The through sleeping car

technology

The commercial invention that made a multi-day railway journey saleable, and the reason a Belgian company could run a train across seven countries without owning a metre of track. Georges Nagelmackers, having seen Pullman's American night trains on a visit in 1867–68, built a business that supplied sleeping and dining cars and staff and attached them to national railways' scheduled trains under contract. The consequence is structural: the Orient Express was a set of carriages, not a railway, so it could be rerouted whenever politics or engineering demanded, could cross borders no single railway administration spanned, and could vanish in 2009 without any line being lifted.

A technology is not a place. Drawing it on a map would assert something about the world that no stored fact supports.
