The specialised vessel that lays, buries and repairs submarine cable, and the scarcest object in the whole system. A cable ship is built around its cargo: circular tanks below decks in which many hundreds of kilometres of cable are coiled by hand-guided teams, sheaves and drum engines to pay it out or haul it in under controlled tension, a bow or stern sheave for the working line, dynamic positioning to hold station, and — on modern ships — a plough for burial and a remotely operated vehicle for shallow-water work. The fleet is small and old. Industry surveys as of the mid-2020s put the global cable ship fleet at roughly sixty vessels, of which only a subset is committed to maintenance rather than new installation, with an average age of around twenty years and many hulls past thirty; the replacement rate has been a standing concern of operators and regulators, and Orange Marine announced in November 2025 that it had ordered two new maintenance ships for Europe, Africa and the Middle East. That scarcity is the hinge of the whole Journey. The internet's resilience is usually described in terms of routing, but the physical layer's resilience is a question of how many ships exist, where they are stationed and how long they take to arrive.
