The NOAA Climate Prediction Center's ENSO diagnostic discussion of 9 July 2026 carried an ENSO Alert System status of El Niño Advisory, with El Niño conditions present and forecast to continue. The next scheduled discussion was 13 August 2026. For this Journey the point is not the forecast but the mechanism: an El Niño is the tropical Pacific's wind-driven circulation reorganising, with the loss of eastern-Pacific upwelling as its most consequential local effect.
