Kiptum becomes the first athlete to break 2:01 in a record-eligible marathon, taking 34 seconds off Eliud Kipchoge's 2:01:09 from Berlin. World Athletics ratifies the mark. Kiptum is killed in a road accident in February 2024, about a week after ratification. The record moves from Berlin to Chicago for the first time in a quarter of a century.
