Trieste reaches the bottom of the Challenger Deep

Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh descend in the bathyscaphe Trieste and reach the floor of the Challenger Deep. Onboard instruments initially indicate about 11,521 m; the figure is later recalculated to about 10,916 m. No human returns to the bottom for 52 years.
