Hiram Bingham reaches Machu Picchu

The Yale historian Hiram Bingham was guided to the ridge site in 1911 and published it internationally, which is how Machu Picchu entered the global imagination. Local families were farming the terraces when he arrived, so 'discovery' describes an act of publication rather than of finding.

Historical — it happened, and the record is settled.
