Mausoleum sculpture is removed to the British Museum

Charles Newton excavated the site of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus from 1856, and in 1857 the surviving relief sculpture and statuary were shipped to London. The result is that the physical remains of two of the ancient wonders, the Mausoleum and the Artemision, are today largely in one building in Bloomsbury rather than in Turkey.

Historical — it happened, and the record is settled.
