The Isua stromatolite claim is reassessed and rejected
Allwood and colleagues re-examined the same Isua outcrop and argued the structures are not stromatolites but deformation features: extending the exposure laterally showed the cones to be cross-sections through elongate ridges rather than conical build-ups, and the internal fabric was found to be inconsistent with sedimentary lamination and consistent with metamorphic and tectonic deformation. The exchange is a useful demonstration of how a claim about the oldest life is actually settled — not by a decisive new instrument but by going back to the outcrop and looking at more of it in three dimensions. It also shows why the majority of workers still treat the 3.48 Ga Pilbara material rather than anything at Isua as the oldest broadly accepted evidence.
