A mechanism for extracting energy from a spinning black hole

Roger Blandford and Roman Znajek described how magnetic field lines threading a rotating black hole can carry away its rotational energy electromagnetically, providing a way to power a jet from the hole itself rather than only from the accreting gas. It remains the leading explanation for relativistic jets, including the M87 jet Curtis had recorded in 1918, and it is one reason the spin of a black hole is an astrophysically consequential quantity rather than a curiosity.

Historical — it happened, and the record is settled.
