Gaia stops observing

After about twelve years of scanning, the European Space Agency ended Gaia's science observations; following technology tests the spacecraft was passivated and moved out of its orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 point on 27 March 2025. The astrometry it collected underpins the modern empirical Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, because a luminosity is only as good as the distance behind it.

Historical — it happened, and the record is settled.
