HYBRIT delivers the first hydrogen-reduced steel

The Swedish HYBRIT consortium — the steelmaker SSAB, the iron ore miner LKAB and the utility Vattenfall — delivers steel made from hydrogen-reduced sponge iron produced at its Luleå pilot plant to the truck manufacturer Volvo. The quantity is small and the delivery is a demonstration rather than a commercial supply. Its importance is that it converts hydrogen direct reduction from a proposal into a demonstrated process chain, and it establishes northern Sweden — hydropower, iron ore and grid capacity in one place — as the location where the economics were least unfavourable.

Historical — it happened, and the record is settled.
