IODP–ICDP Expedition 364 drills the Chicxulub peak ring
A joint International Ocean Discovery Program and International Continental Scientific Drilling Program expedition drilled a core into the peak ring of the Chicxulub crater offshore Yucatán, recovering granitic basement rock that had been uplifted from several kilometres depth and then collapsed outward. The result confirmed the dynamic collapse model of peak-ring formation, in which the target rock behaves briefly as a fluid, and it provided material for work on the environmental aftermath and on how quickly life recolonised the crater basin. It is also a rare case where a hypothesis about a 66-million-year-old event was tested by drilling a hole in the specific place the model predicted the rock would be.
