A regularly pulsing radio source is identified
Jocelyn Bell, a postgraduate student at Cambridge, isolated a recurring signal on chart recordings from the array she had helped build. The source, CP 1919, pulsed with a period near 1.337 seconds and a stability that no known stellar process could produce. Within months it was interpreted as a rotating neutron star, confirming the 1934 hypothesis. The 1968 announcement in Nature carried Antony Hewish's name first; the 1974 Nobel Prize went to Hewish and Ryle and not to Bell.
