The R-7 completes a successful full-range flight

After a series of failures the R-7 flew a full-range test from Tyuratam to the Kamchatka impact area, becoming the first intercontinental ballistic missile to work. The Soviet announcement of the achievement attracted comparatively little attention abroad. Six weeks later the same vehicle placed a satellite in orbit and the world paid a great deal of attention, which is a useful lesson about what makes a capability legible.

Historical — it happened, and the record is settled.
