World Athletics regulates the racing shoe

World Athletics limits road racing shoes to a midsole no thicker than 40 mm and no more than one rigid plate, and from 30 April 2020 requires that any shoe worn in competition has been on retail sale for at least four months, ending prototypes. The rule does not ban the carbon-plated shoe; it fixes a ceiling under which the whole elite field now runs. Every marathon time from this point is a time run in a regulated shoe.

Historical — it happened, and the record is settled.
