The sarsen circle and trilithons are raised at Stonehenge

The great sarsens are erected on Salisbury Plain, with lintels jointed to their uprights by mortise and tenon and to each other by tongue and groove. It is post-and-lintel construction taken to the limit of what the technique allows, and the joints show that the builders understood the ring as a locked structure rather than a stack of loose stones.

Historical — it happened, and the record is settled.
