Valerios Stais excavates the Tumulus of the Athenians
The Greek archaeologist Valerios Stais excavates the Soros at Marathon and confirms it as the burial mound of the Athenian dead of 490 BCE. The excavation falls five years before the first modern Olympic Games and in the middle of the European enthusiasm for Greek antiquity out of which the marathon race was invented.

The Soros at Marathon holds the ashes of 192 Athenians who fell in 490 BCE, stands about 10 m high with a diameter of about 50 m, and was excavated by Valerios Stais in 1891.
