Wreck becomes eligible for UNESCO protection

On the centenary of the sinking the site passed the hundred-year threshold in the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage, bringing it within that instrument for states party to it. Protection remains partial in practice: the wreck lies in international waters, salvage has been conducted under US court supervision since 1987, and the hull is degrading steadily.

Historical — it happened, and the record is settled.
