The canon of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

The idea, not any one building: a fixed set of seven marvels, all of them within reach of a Greek traveller in the eastern Mediterranean and Near East, five of them Greek work.

  • is authored earliest surviving version of of Antipater of Sidon — Greek Anthology 9.58, attributed to Antipater, is the oldest surviving text that gathers seven marvels into one list.
  • is sole survivor of of Great Pyramid of Giza (Pyramid of Khufu) — It is the only entry on the ancient canon that still stands, and it predates the other six by roughly two thousand years.
  • is postdates of Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre), Rome — The Colosseum opened in AD 80, roughly two centuries after Antipater's epigram, so it could not have been a candidate for the ancient canon.
