Istanbul

city · earth

The eastern object of the whole Orient Express project, and the city that shows what the phrase "the route survived, the purpose did not" actually costs a map. Advertised in 1883 as Constantinople, capital of an empire that no longer exists, and officially Istanbul from 1930 under the Turkish Republic. Rails reached it from Europe in the 1870s and 1880s under the Hirsch concession; the terminus building at Sirkeci opened in 1890. It is the only city on this Journey where the passenger arrives on one continent and the onward railway starts on another, at Haydarpaşa across the Bosphorus — a break the through service never bridged, and which was closed only in the twenty-first century by the Marmaray tunnel, which also took Sirkeci out of main-line use.

  28. Supports Sirkeci Terminal's construction between 1888 and 1890 by August Jasmund, its opening on 3 November 1890 under the name Müşir Ahmet Paşa Station, and its present use as a railway museum and cultural venue. V55 verification basis: substance carried in an attributed search summary; the article was not fetched and no TCDD or Turkish heritage-register record was consulted.
  29. Supports the 17 April 1869 Ottoman concession to Baron Maurice de Hirsch for c. 2,500 km of line linking Constantinople and Vienna, the 1870 founding of the Chemins de fer Orientaux, simultaneous construction starts at Constantinople, Dedeağaç, Salonica and Dobrljin in January 1870, and the 1871 renegotiation. V55 verification basis: an independent documented history rather than an archive; substance carried in attributed search results, PDF not retrieved.
