Constantinople

Founded as the Greek colony of Byzantion around 660 BCE, refounded by Constantine I and dedicated in 330 CE as the eastern imperial capital. Its position on the Bosphorus made it the point where goods carried overland and by the Black Sea entered European markets. Byzantine sericulture began here in the sixth century, breaking the eastern monopoly on silk production. Genoese ships carried plague to it in 1347. It fell to the Ottomans on 29 May 1453 and was officially renamed Istanbul in 1930.
