White Star Line's three-ship answer to Cunard's faster Lusitania and Mauretania: compete on size, comfort and steadiness rather than speed. Olympic (yard 400), Titanic (yard 401) and Britannic (yard 433) were designed at Harland and Wolff under Alexander Carlisle and Thomas Andrews, with a combination of reciprocating engines and a low-pressure turbine. Only Olympic completed a full commercial career; the design's watertight subdivision was substantially revised after 1912.
