The herds concentrate on the ash-derived short-grass plains around Ndutu and the western Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the large majority of females calve within about three weeks. Figures of 400,000–500,000 calves circulate widely; they are derived from population size and pregnancy rate rather than counted, and shift with whichever census estimate is used.
