The Great Migration

The clockwise circuit printed on every safari map is a statistical average of many years; the collared animals depart from it routinely.

One tuft of short grass holds the frame, cropped close and low so it stands about a hand's height in front of the reader rather than sitting somewhere inside a landscape. High sun, flat light, almost no shadow at its base. Behind it a low horizon, far off and unoccupied. Dry, wide, ground-level, empty — a place stated as a climate first, so that when the animals arrive they arrive as a consequence of it.

The Great Migration is not an itinerary and never was — it is a circuit reassembled out of rainfall every year — and at each stage of it the feature that governs the system is not the feature that gets photographed, up to and including the size of the herd, which two credible surveys now disagree about by more than a factor of two.

Why Richseen chose this

A million animals arriving in the same corner of the same plain within the same three weeks, year after year, has the look of something being directed. The corpus supports nothing of the kind. Distribution across the year can be reproduced from rainfall and the vegetation flush that follows it; the calving grounds sit at the dry end of the gradient rather than the productive end; the mortality everyone films turns out to be trivial against a drought nobody filmed. What makes the subject worth a Journey is that the visible features and the governing ones come apart at every step, and that the Serengeti is one of very few migratory systems carrying sixty years of continuous monitoring — which is precisely why the current disagreement about how many wildebeest there are is an argument rather than a shrug.

The Richseen lens

The gap, at each stage of the circuit, between the feature on screen and the feature doing the work. Track that gap and the migration reads as a mechanism rather than a spectacle all the way to the population figure, which turns out to be the last substitution in the sequence rather than the settled fact underneath the others.

Where the grass is worst

Abundance stops being the variable. The reader begins reading the ecosystem for mineral quality and open sightlines rather than for green, and notices that the most critical weeks happen partly outside the national park.

Arriving faster than they can be eaten

Synchrony stops being a curiosity and becomes a defence with a cost structure — collective rather than individual, sound only at scale, and dependent on a predator that cannot leave its den behind.

The company they keep

The migration stops being one species. The classical ordering of grazers by body size meets collar, dietary and camera data and comes back only partly upheld, which is a different and more interesting thing than wrong.

The constraint that was lifted

The reader acquires the finding the rest of the Journey rests on: a constraint was removed, the numbers climbed and then stopped, and where they stopped is what identified food as the thing setting the ceiling.

The most familiar image of this subject is relocated: measured, kept, and moved out of the question of population size into the question of what the river eats.

Pressure from outside the line

The threat leaves the frame. Resilience is being spent beyond the boundary drawn to protect it, and two neighbouring migrations of the same species have already gone.

Connections you would not expect

  • The same annual carcass load is negligible and enormous at once. Measured against a herd of over a million it is a fraction of a per cent; measured against the river receiving it, it is a major nutrient subsidy to the food web, on the order of adding ten blue whales to a mid-sized river every year. Nothing about the number changes between those two readings — only what it is divided by.

  • The ash that makes the calving grass mineral-rich is the same deposition that makes Olduvai Gorge readable. One geological process is simultaneously the reason a hominin record can be dated and the reason a million animals give birth in a particular corner of a plain — and the second of those is the claim the corpus can least well measure.

  • The prey's defence depends on the predator's domestic arrangements. Spotted hyenas hold permanent territories around a communal den and commute to whichever herds are nearest, and lactating females pay the heaviest commuting cost of all — so the animal best placed to exploit a concentrated calf supply is the one least able to travel to it.

  • The argument about how many wildebeest there are is a privilege of being measured. A research programme running since the 1960s produced the population series that a satellite survey could then contradict; most migratory systems have no comparable record and therefore no way to notice a discrepancy at all. The dispute is a symptom of unusually good data, not of unusually bad data.

What is not settled

  • Is rainfall the only cue, or is some of the route learned?

    Rainfall and the vegetation flush that follows it reproduce the observed distribution across the year well enough to model it. That is not the same as showing rainfall is the sole cue, and how much learned or socially transmitted route knowledge contributes is unsettled. The collar dataset shows departures from the published calendar but does not adjudicate the question.

  • Is the calving-ground grass actually richer in phosphorus and calcium than grass elsewhere in the ecosystem?

    This is the weakest link in the Journey's spine and canonical knowledge says so plainly. The mineral-quality explanation is the standard account and is repeated consistently, but a measured comparison between the plains and the northern woodlands was not located. The limit here is an absence in the sources rather than a dispute between them.

  • How many calves are actually born, and how many inside the window?

    The widely circulated totals are derived from population size and pregnancy rate rather than counted, which means they move with whichever census estimate is used — and the census estimate is itself the subject of the final chapter. No primary study reporting the exact proportion born inside the three-week window was located.

  • What kills the animals that die at the crossings?

    The total carcass input to the river is measured. The split between drowning, trampling in the crush and crocodile predation is not separately quantified in any source located, so the animal most associated with the crossings is the one whose share of them is least known.

  • Does the classical ordering of grazers by body size hold?

    Partly. Collar, dietary and camera work published in 2024 found zebra and wildebeest travelling much closer together than the model predicted, with competition rather than facilitation pushing zebra ahead, while gazelle did trail the large migrants — but over a far shorter lag than originally proposed. The Journey keeps the model and its revision side by side rather than retiring one.

  • What follows from the loss of resilience at the boundaries?

    The edge-degradation findings are measured across forty years and are not a forecast. No source located predicts when or whether the Serengeti circuit would fail, and the corpus states explicitly that any such projection should be treated as scenario rather than prediction. This Journey stops where the measurement stops.

  • How many wildebeest are there?

    The most contested claim in the Journey. An aerial point survey and an AI satellite survey of the same population differ by more than a factor of two; the satellite authors framed their result as complementary and noted that timing, coverage and method could account for much of the gap, while named specialists rejected it as an abundance estimate. A correction to the satellite paper has been published and no reconciliation has. Nobody in the argument is claiming a die-off.

What to carry out of this

Instruction is the wrong category for this system, and so is conclusion. The reader arrived with a route, a season and a number, and leaves with a gradient, a soil chemistry the corpus cannot yet measure, and two estimates that will not reconcile. What generalises is the habit practised all the way through: the feature that photographs is rarely the feature that governs, and the discipline is to keep asking which of the two is in front of you. Whether there are six hundred thousand animals out there or one and a half million is currently a question about aircraft and satellites rather than about animals. The short-grass plains are not waiting on the answer. They flush green when the rain reaches them, and the herds are on them in the wet season either way.
