Blue Whale Migration

The longest blue whale ever measured and the heaviest one ever weighed are two different animals, and both entered the record on a factory deck.

Quiet in the wrong way. There is no water sound at the start and no song — the voice belongs to the last chapter, sixty years of it, and is not available here. What is audible instead is a working deck: a length called out, a weight called out, a date entered and then disputed. Flat register, clerical tempo, the rhythm of dictation rather than of surf. The superlatives arrive at the speed of someone writing them into a book, which is the speed at which they were first made.

The largest animal that has ever lived is a specialist that cannot be fed by ordinary seawater — and because it must go where its smallest prey has already packed itself together, so could the fleets, and so must the instruments. Where a blue whale can be described at all is a map of where things concentrate.

Why Richseen chose this

A species was reduced to a fraction of one percent of its former size in the ocean where most of it lived, and the arithmetic of that reduction had to be repaired decades afterwards because the catch returns filed with the regulator were partly invented. That makes the conservation problem and the knowledge problem one problem rather than two. The population hunted hardest is the population that can be described least; the recovery that can be measured most confidently belongs to the stock that had least to recover from. Held that way, a species becomes a case study in what a damaged record can and cannot be asked to support. Held the other way, an epistemic failure turns into a nature documentary.

The Richseen lens

What this subject turns on is density rather than distance. A blue whale can only feed where krill has already concentrated; the fleets located animals by locating the same concentrations; and the record today is thick exactly where the tags and the hydrophones are, and nearly empty everywhere else. Gathering is the repeated fact — of prey, of hunting, of instruments, of risk.

The definite article goes. There is no single blue whale migration to follow, and the population that does not migrate at all is the one that proves it.

What is not settled

  • Where do Antarctic blue whales spend the winter?

    Unknown. The direct telemetric record for the subspecies is two published tracks; acoustic detections establish presence and call type across the Southern Ocean but do not follow an animal to a destination. The corpus states the winter distribution as not established rather than proposing one.

  • How many were there before the whaling?

    Two reconstructions of pre-exploitation Antarctic abundance appear in the sources with different figures and overlapping wide intervals, and both rest on a twentieth-century catch series that was partly falsified while it was in use. Every recovery percentage in this Journey has that uncertainty in its denominator, and the Journey does not choose between the reconstructions.

  • Why has the song been getting lower for sixty years?

    No accepted explanation. The 2009 work that described the pattern raised several candidates and settled on none, and the trend appears across independently maintained recording programmes in different basins, so it is not an artefact of one instrument. The corpus also records that whether the trend has continued since then was not established.

  • Does the loss of whale-mediated iron recycling explain the krill decline?

    Contested. The mechanism is recorded as the leading proposed explanation rather than an established one, and how much of the decline it accounts for against sea-ice change and the krill fishery is not settled. The krill biomass figures it would be measured against come from methods the corpus explicitly says are not comparable with each other.

  • Is the northern Indian Ocean population a distinct subspecies?

    Genuinely unsettled, and the corpus keeps the provisional designation rather than resolving it. The Journey leans on this population as its central counterexample while its taxonomic standing is open, which is a weight the reader should be able to see.

  • Where exactly do the routes run, as lines rather than as endpoints?

    Canonical knowledge locates points, not paths: the two routes, the California Current, the Gulf of California and the Santa Barbara Channel are all held without a coordinate, so the five places this package features are nodes and the connecting geography is absent by design. The limit here is an absence in the model rather than a disagreement between sources, and any drawn route in a later surface would be an invention this Journey does not own.

  • When and where was the longest blue whale actually measured?

    The sources retrieved disagree — one gives a South Georgia station in one year, another a different date at Grytviken — and the corpus records the event as uncertain with both accounts standing, because the station measurement books were not consulted. The Journey opens on this record and should open on the disagreement with it.

What to carry out of this

The size is the least of it. This is a specialist that cannot be fed by average ocean, only by the few places and few weeks where its prey has already gathered, and that one constraint explains the migration, explains how the fleets found them, and explains where ships and whales still meet. The corollary is harder to hold. The population described in the finest detail is the one that was hunted least; the population that supplied every record measurement is the one for which two satellite tracks exist. So the Journey ends on the questions its own evidence leaves standing. Where do the Antarctic animals spend the winter, when acoustics can establish that they are somewhere but cannot follow one of them to a destination? And why has the voice been dropping, in every basin, for sixty years? The corpus records both as unresolved, and an answer offered here would be an invention.

This is unfinished in the world, not only in the telling.
