Santa Barbara Channel
node · earth · Southern California
The channel between the southern California mainland and the northern Channel Islands. It is simultaneously one of the densest blue whale feeding areas in the eastern North Pacific and a major approach to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which is why the ship-strike problem is concentrated here rather than spread evenly along the coast. It is also where the main mitigation experiment runs: a voluntary vessel speed reduction scheme covering designated zones along the California coast.
