Point Conception
node · earth
The headland in southwestern Santa Barbara County where the California coast turns from north-south to east-west and the Santa Barbara Channel opens to the Pacific. It is a hydrographic hinge rather than a scenic one: water upwelled along the coast north of the point is advected south past it, and the blue whale feeding aggregations of the northern Channel Islands sit in that advected water. The geography of the migration's northern end is therefore set by a corner in a coastline.
