Grytviken Whaling Station

The first shore whaling station on South Georgia, established by Carl Anton Larsen in 1904 - whaling began there on 16 November 1904 and the whale-oil factory started production on 24 December that year. It operated until 1965, first under the Compania Argentina de Pesca and later under Albion Star. It is the place where the numbers in this Journey were physically produced: carcasses were flensed, measured and entered in station books, and the longest blue whale on record is associated with this station. That measurement is also where the sources retrieved disagree - one gives 1909 at a South Georgia station, another says the animal was processed at Grytviken around 1912.
