Whaling ends at South Georgia

Grytviken closes in 1965 after sixty-one years of operation. Accounts of South Georgia whaling as a whole give the industrial period as 1904-1971, over which 42,698 blue whales were killed there. What follows is near-silence: more than 34,000 km of systematic survey effort between 1998 and 2018 yields a single blue whale sighting.
