Life at the Poles

The largest animal that lives its whole life on Antarctic land is a wingless midge a few millimetres long.

One disc, edge to edge across the frame: Antarctica from directly overhead, lit flat and evenly the way a specimen under glass is lit, with no shadow anywhere to say which edge is the front. Table-object scale rather than landscape scale — there is no horizon in it and no sky above it. Its twin then arrives at identical width and identical angle, unlabelled, and nothing in the interface says which of the two is water. Cold light throughout, and no animal in the frame.

Two systems share a word and almost nothing else — the Arctic is an ocean with land around it and Antarctica is land with ocean around it — and that single difference in geometry decides which animals could ever arrive, how each food web is shaped, and what kind of law each place could ever be given.

Why Richseen chose this

The word polar does a great deal of quiet work. It files two places in one category, and the category is wrong in exactly the way that matters: one pole can be walked to and the other cannot. That single piece of geometry then runs the whole length of both systems without weakening. It is why the largest animal living its whole life on Antarctic land is a wingless midge, why the Southern Ocean food web passes through a single crustacean, and why the south could be handed a binding treaty while the north received a forum that binds nobody. Anyone reasoning about polar change is reasoning about two systems at once. The same shock — less sea ice — enters each of them through a different shape, and it is the shapes, not the shock, that decide what follows.

The law that follows from who lives there

Governance stops looking like a choice between two philosophies and starts looking like a consequence of residence: hard rules where nobody lives, a table without regulatory power where everybody does, and a third answer in the archipelago that settled sovereignty and opened access instead.

Connections you would not expect

  • One feature, defined the same way at both ends of the Earth — a hole in the pack that keeps reopening — is a hunting ground with settlements arranged around it in the north and an ice factory feeding the deepest water of the world ocean in the south. The physics that makes the hole is the same physics; what it produces depends entirely on which polar system it opens in.

  • The depth of snow drifted over a breathing hole is not a quantity anyone would file under large carnivores. It is where a ringed seal builds the lair its pup is hidden in, the pup is what the bear is hunting, and so a variable about snow arrives at the top of the food web without passing through anything that looks like a bear problem on the way.

  • Two unrelated seals at opposite poles hold winter breathing holes open in fast ice that excludes every competitor — one with the claws on its foreflippers, the other with its teeth, at a cost the older animals wear in their jaws. The same problem, solved twice with different equipment, and in both hemispheres it is what makes thick shorefast ice usable at all.

  • The first party to reach the South Pole travelled on dogs, skis, a diet and a method developed by people of the Arctic. The emptiest place on Earth was reached with knowledge that could only have been produced where the ice was somebody's home — a transfer between two poles that share almost no biology and, at that date, no institutions at all.

  • Two instruments internationalise a polar territory by opposite means within forty years. One confirms a single state's sovereignty outright and opens the ground to everyone else's nationals; the other leaves sovereignty unanswered so that nobody's presence counts as a claim. Both are still working, which is the awkward part for anyone who thinks there is a correct answer.

  • Everything else in this Journey belongs to one pole and could not reach the other. A small seabird breeds in the north and winters in the southern pack ice every year, on a looping route shaped by prevailing winds rather than by the shortest line — the only animal in the corpus for which the two systems are a single annual circuit.

What is not settled

  • Is the turn in the Antarctic sea-ice record a change of regime or an unusually large swing?

    The southern record showed no decline for decades, then fell to successive record lows. A record a few decades long cannot easily separate a regime shift from natural variability in a system with decadal and longer cycles, and the corpus says so rather than choosing. This is the Journey's live question and it is left open on purpose.

  • When did Antarctica become biologically isolated?

    The date is tied to the onset of the circumpolar current, and both the onset date and the direction of cause — whether the current drove the glaciation or followed it — are actively contested, with estimates spanning tens of millions of years. This Journey leans on the isolation in every chapter and resolves none of it; Ocean Currents is where the corpus takes the question on directly.

  • How much of the reported krill decline is a trend, and how much is an artefact of how it was sampled?

    The 2004 analysis compiled net hauls collected by different methods over about eight decades. The mechanism linking larval survival to winter ice is not seriously disputed; the magnitude of the decline is, which is why no figure for it appears anywhere in this Journey.

  • What share of polar primary production comes from ice algae rather than open water?

    Estimates differ widely by region and by method and none is defensible on its own. This matters to the reading, because the Journey rests a whole chapter on the *timing* the ice-algal bloom sets rather than on the tonnage it contributes — the argument survives the missing number, and the number is still missing.

  • Where exactly is the Halley Bay colony?

    Canonical knowledge records no coordinate for it, and the reason is the subject rather than a gap in the archive: emperor colonies stand on fast ice that shifts between seasons, so a fixed point would misdescribe them. That is why the colony is absent from this package's places, and the absence is worth showing — a breeding site that cannot be pinned is the species' whole predicament stated as geography.

  • What condition is the Arctic Council in now?

    Seven states paused participation in March 2022 and limited written work resumed afterwards. The corpus deliberately declines to describe the position beyond that, and this package holds the same line: partially operating, not normal, and not guessed at.

What to carry out of this

The two poles were named as a pair and have been read as a pair ever since, which is why the most consequential recent observation about them is the easiest to miss: they have stopped behaving alike. Everything in this Journey that looks like a difference in wildlife turns out to be a difference in access, and everything that looks like a difference in politics turns out to be a difference in residence. What is genuinely unresolved is the newest part — one measurement series, decades old, against systems whose cycles are longer than that. The Journey ends with the one animal that files no comparison at all: a seabird that breeds at one pole, winters in the pack ice of the other, and crosses between them on a route bent by the wind rather than drawn to the shortest line.

This is unfinished in the world, not only in the telling.
