Three sightings are claimed within the same year: a Russian expedition under Bellingshausen in late January, a Royal Navy survey under Bransfield days later, and the American sealer Nathaniel Palmer in November. The evidence is logbooks and charts of varying quality, the national investment in each claim is considerable, and the question has never been settled to everyone's satisfaction. It is recorded here as unresolved rather than decided, because the dispute itself is part of why the continent later needed a treaty that could work without settling who got there first.
